‘HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT DISARMS GUNMAN…GETS SUSPENDED?’

A Florida high school student wrestled a loaded gun away from another teen on the bus ride home this week and was slapped with a suspension in return.

The 16-year-old Cypress Lake High student in Fort Myers, Fla. told WFTX-TV there was “no doubt” he saved a life after grappling for the loaded .22 caliber revolver being aimed point-blank at another student on Tuesday.

“I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there,” said the suspended student, not identified by WFTX because of safety concerns. “Not taking no pity.”

The student said the suspect, a football player, threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend.

Authorities confirmed to WFTX the weapon was indeed loaded, and the arrest report stated the suspect, identified by WVZN-TV as Quadryle Davis, was “pointing the gun directly” at the other student and “threatening to shoot him.”

That’s when, the teen told the station, he and two others tackled the suspect and wrestled the gun away. The next day, all three were suspended.

“How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?” he asked.

The school’s referral slip said he was given an “emergency suspension” for being involved in an “incident” with a weapon. Lee County School District spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said in a statement that “If there is a potentially dangerous situation, Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing.”

“Those kids had to fight for their lives,” the mother of the suspended teen said. “All the kids that was involved in this they should have a pat on their backs because they did the right thing to save someone from burying their child.”

The suspended teen is allowed to go back to school Monday.

Meanwhile, the student accused of pointing the weapon has been charged only with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon “without intent” to kill.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and that the charges are “based on our findings at this time.”

High-capacity gun magazines airlifted to ‘freedom-loving’ Americans

A gun-magazine company in Boulder, Colo., has announced a campaign based on the Berlin Airlift to help Coloradoans “trapped inside occupied territory” to purchase large-capacity magazines before the Legislature passes a series of gun-control bills next week.

Magpul Industries manufactures magazines and other gun accessories for private, law-enforcement and military use. WND recently reported on how the company may be forced to relocate if the Democrat-controlled Legislature moves forward with plans to ban high capacity magazines, which is one of the company’s key products.

Following the president’s lead on the firearms issue, Democrats in the House passed a series of gun-control bills that the Obama administration has said would help them pass similar measures in other states.

Vice President Joe Biden “said it would send a strong message to the rest of the country that a western state had passed gun-control bills,” Tony Exhum, a Democrat lawmaker from Colorado Springs, told the Denver Post.

The series of bills included:

H.B. 1224, which would bans all magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

H.B. 1226 would prohibit those with concealed carry permits, including off-duty police officers and former military personnel, from bringing their weapons on college campuses.

H.B. 1228 would force residents to pay for exercising a constitutional right by making them pay for a background check to prove they are not criminals. There is no limit on the amount the Colorado Bureau of Investigation could charge for the background check.

H.B. 1229 bans the private sale and transfer of firearms and institutes universal background checks and/gun registration for all Colorado gun owners.

In addition to the four house bills, on Monday the Senate Judiciary Committee will also conduct hearings on two additional bills.

S.B. 195 prohibits citizens in Colorado from taking online concealed carry training courses.

S.B. 196, which bans “assault” weapons sales in the state.

With Democrats in charge of the governorship and both state houses, the measures are expected to pass.

In anticipation of the magazine ban, Magpul has announced a project it calls the “Boulder Airlift” in its latest newsletter. The company said the project imitates the Berlin Airlift, which flew in supplies to West Berlin after the Soviets prevented the city from getting needed provisions in the days following World War II.

“Similar to the Berlin Airlift, the Boulder Airlift will bring much-needed supplies to freedom-loving residents trapped inside occupied territory,” the letter said. “While we plan to initially use FedEx or UPS instead of aerial delivery, we figure that $5 flat rate shipping will make up for any loss of ‘style points.’”

It goes on to explain the company is permitting Colorado residents to create a special account to purchase magazines prior to the ban.

“If the pending state legislation limiting sales and transfers of standard capacity magazines does pass, we will not be the only ones affected; Colorado residents’ right to purchase and transfer standard capacity magazines will be infringed in the near future,” the newsletter said. “With that in mind, we are beginning a program to help as many residents of our home state as we can, while we still can. To meet this need, we have set up a process for CO residents to purchase limited quantities of magazines from our website.”

The company is selling Colorado residents high-capacity magazines at bargain basement prices. The price for a 30-round magazine for an AR-15 is $12.95 with other magazines for MAK-90 7.62 rounds selling for $19.95. At stores, many of the same magazines are currently being sold for upwards of $50.

The company has warned lawmakers that if the magazine ban passes, they will be forced to relocate to another state.

“If we’re able to stay in Colorado and manufacture a product, but law-abiding citizens of the state were unable to purchase the product, customers around the state and the nation would boycott us for remaining here,” said Doug Smith, chief operating officer for Magpul Industries. “Staying here would hurt our business.”

Democrat Rep. Daniel Kagan said Magpul just doesn’t understand what the law says.

“Manufacturers will be able to still sell and transfer these high-capacity magazines to individuals in other states, the U.S. military and law enforcement,” Kagan told the Post. “We want [Magpul] to stay here in Colorado. It would be sad to see them leave.”

Dudley Brown, president of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and executive director of the National Association of Gun Rights, said Democrats will be engaging in political suicide if they continue with their plans to ban products produced by Magpul and strip away the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

“Gun owners are coming out of the woodwork right now to fight the battle,” Brown said. “What they are doing to us now in the legislature, we get to do to them in the next election, and we’re not going to play nice, either. We know how to play hardball, and we’re really going to play hardball this year.”

Weld County Sheriff John Cooke said he applauds Magpul’s efforts to help the state’s residents.

“I think their project is great. They recognize the unfair limitations that legislatures are putting on Colorado residents when none of the other surrounding states have a magazine ban. Magpul being a Colorado company, at least for now, is performing a great service. This is a great thing for the people of Colorado.”

Cooke said the magazine ban makes no sense, and he noted that his department has never had a situation that involved criminals using high-capacity magazines.

The sheriff has been an outspoken advocate for the Second Amendment during his time in office. Recently he declared his office had no intention to enforce any of Obama’s executive orders on gun control.

“I’m not going to help him in any way,” Cooke said. “I’m not going to enforce it because it’s unenforceable and because I don’t have the resources. The federal government doesn’t have the resources.”

Critics have said Cooke does not have the right to choose which laws to enforce; however, the sheriff brushes aside the concerns, accusing critics of having a double standard.

“Obama has refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. He has also chosen not to enforce our immigration laws. I find it interesting that these critics have no problem with that. Why should I be held to a different standard than the president?”

Cooke noted that the company has always been known for fair prices.

“They’ve always been really reasonable in the prices they charge. This program will help the law-abiding citizens of Colorado purchase a legal product that can help them with self-defense in these last few days before the Democrats decide to prohibit their sale.”

Leaving aside for the moment the likelihood that parties and party politics in America will become moot within the next few years (owing to the emergence of a single party or the country’s dissolution into civil war), conservatives and libertarians are finding themselves at an unpleasant crossroads. While some observers gave up on the leadership of the Republican Party long ago, it is now becoming apparent to rank-and-file Republicans that the GOP leadership and its prominent operatives are wholly complicit in the fundamental transformation of America.

As the parchment upon which the Constitution is written approaches 451 degrees, some are now being openly accused of their treason, because the causes and effects thereof have become apparent. A preponderance of conservatives and libertarians have recognized the deeply malignant designs of the Obama administration, with which there is no good faith negotiation. Thus, they do not expect anything that even resembles weakness from those who claim to be opposed to the course the President has set.While these might not be on board with the “fundamental transformation” as referenced by candidate Obama in 2008 (his being a dedicated Marxist and all), they are indeed working in concert with Democrats to bring about a monolithic socialist state. Worse, many said Republicans have been masquerading as staunch conservatives and are acknowledged as such, so they are accepted by committed conservative voters.

Like the decision of Ohio Governor John Kasich to accept Obamacare funding to expand his state’s Medicaid program. There are few acts that could be viewed more readily as capitulation to the Obama regime than this. Informed conservatives and libertarians have been aware that Obamacare is the death knell for liberty in America since before it was passed into law. Kasich campaigned as a fiscal conservative, and the support of the Tea Party was instrumental in his election. In so doing, he has stabbed these constituents in the back. Kasich was heretofore considered by many conservatives to be one of the faithful.

Recently, a furor in conservative circles erupted over the Conservative Victory Project, started by Karl Rove and the super-PAC American Crossroads. The goal of this group is ostensibly to protect incumbent Republicans against primary challengers and avoid losses like the GOP saw in 2012. Conservatives and Tea Party members have accused Rove of putting the establishment ahead of conservative principles by supporting weak establishment candidates who lose, and sabotaging viable conservative candidates.Another treachery that has gained wider implementation is the proclivity that prominent “conservative” politicians and operatives have for marginalizing grass-roots conservatives like the Tea Party.

Which he is clearly doing. Rove points to real conservative candidates his organization has supported, but his flawed prognostication, stymieing of grass-roots efforts, and inconsistent signals to the base speak to someone who is more wedded to the establishment than principles. We cannot forget that he was “the architect” for the uber-establishment faux conservative George W. Bush.

Conservatives know that the stakes are too high for these boilerplate political games, so why don’t so-called conservatives like Rove, Kasich, Newt Gingrich, John Boehner, and a host of others?

The answer is clear, and the operative term is “games.” The machinations of the GOP power brokers in recent years haven’t been those of ineptitude or spinelessness, they have been those of collusion. These high-profile Republican operatives are oligarchs of the same mold as their Democrat counterparts. Personally, they may hold slightly different political views, but these are analogous to two people who prefer different varieties of cheesecake.

For decades, people have scoffed at the idea that powerful Republicans were indeed compromising American interests in favor of various global socialist agendas, even as evidence continued to mount. Charges that were leveled 30 years ago have been validated, yet the scoffing continues. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush signed the U.S. onto the United Nations’ Agenda 21. This is now widely recognized as an insidious means by which the economies of Western nations – America in particular – might be crippled under the pretext of “sustainability.” At this point it is quite clear that Agenda 21 is sinister, yet prominent faux conservatives titter right along with liberals at this notion.

This is but one example of where that which once appeared to be fringe conspiracy theory is now reality. When I was growing up in the 1970s, there were those who spoke of the dangers of the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and other agencies, even as Republicans of the day claimed membership therein. Now the agendas are out in the open rather than the ramblings of “fringe elements,” but the proponents of globalism have gained so much ground that there may be no stopping their progress in America short of civil war.

So what’s a conservative to do? If there is a chance of reversing this process at theballot box, with whom should constitutionally-minded conservatives and libertarians align themselves, particularly considering the fact that there are still so many of their number who trust the GOP?

I tend to agree with colleagues who have concluded that the federal government is lost, and that we must concentrate our efforts – at least in the short term – on our state governments. Vis-à-vis Obamacare, for example, it has been rightly asserted that refusal to cooperate on the part of the states will be an effective counter to its implementation. Ruthless scrutiny with regard to who we send to the state house as well as to Congress, eschewing even thwarting the campaigns of party establishment hacks, is another way we might retain a measure of liberty within the states in which we reside. Unless and until the Federal government initiates a full-blown police state, the statists may still be neutralized via the current political infrastructure.

The above displays an astonishing mendacity, an utter contempt, for American citizens, and this is coming from the chief law enforcement officer in the nation! It is becoming increasingly clear, standing on the sidelines is no longer an option. Simply put, another chance to save/assert Conservative values will not be viable, at least for many generations to come.

However, as some readers well know, the subject of alcoholism/substance abuse is one such exception, duly addressed when necessary. Its deadly impact warrants an occasional departure from regular fare. Absolutely.

And it is this differential which leads smack into today’s commentary, thus, proving why the above education is more than an exercise in venting. Tragically, recent events bear testimony to the efficacy of all of the above, though gleaned mainly through what has become a revolving door for drunk drivers – turn style-like – as they (literally) stumble through America’s halls of “justice”, and other court systems too.

But it is not as if legal professionals (and their surrogates) are lacking in supportive evidence, to calculate the (probable) rate of recidivism for DUI/DWI offenders. Reams of studies are accessible, but only if one is performing their due diligence. On the other side of the legal spectrum, is the all too familiar lackadaisical, callous response – “case dismissed”.

As a public service, and just for starters, the following is one such example, out of volumes of qualified research:

‘Risk of Alcohol-Impaired Driving Recidivism Among First Offenders and Multiple Offenders‘ –

Objectives. We sought to determine the statewide impact of having prior alcohol-impaired driving violations of any type on the rate of first occurrence or recidivism among drivers with 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more prior violations in Maryland.

Methods. We analyzed more than 100 million driver records from 1973 to 2004 and classified all Maryland drivers into 4 groups: those with 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more prior violations. The violation rates for approximately 21 million drivers in these 4 groups were compared for the study period 1999 to 2004.

Results. On average, there were 3.4, 24.3, 35.9, and 50.8 violations per 1000 drivers a year among those with 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more priors, respectively. The relative risks for men compared with women among these groups of drivers were 3.8, 1.2, 1.0, and 1.0, respectively.

Conclusions. The recidivism rate among first offenders more closely resembles that of second offenders than of nonoffenders. Men and women are at equal risk of recidivating once they have had a first violation documented. Any alcohol-impaired driving violation, not just convictions, is a marker for future recidivism.

Efforts at reducing the consequences of drinking and driving have met with some success over the last 2 decades. However, in spite of tougher laws, increased enforcement, and greater public awareness, the presence of persistent drinking drivers on US roadways continues to be a major public health problem. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have per se laws, which make it a criminal offense to drive with a blood alcohol concentration at or greater than 0.08%.¹ A conviction for alcohol-impaired driving traditionally results in a license suspension or revocation as well as other sanctions ordered by the judiciary. Because states consider driving a privilege and not a right, as a condition of licensure, a person is presumed to consent to chemical testing upon arrest for alcohol-impaired driving.² In addition to criminal proceedings, in 41 states (including Maryland) and the District of Columbia, a driver is subject to administrative license suspension (administrative per se; APS) for failing or refusing the chemical test.³ APS laws allow enforcement, acting in an administrative capacity at arrest, to immediately suspend or revoke the license of a driver independent of criminal proceedings. As a deterrent, APS laws enhance the certainty, celerity, and severity of sanctions for alcohol-impaired driving, something not always obtainable by the criminal justice system.⁴ Criminal prosecution for the violation follows APS; however, sanctioning drivers under both mechanisms is not considered double jeopardy under constitutional law.

Following a criminal conviction, at least 22 states have diversion programs that allow convicted drinking drivers to ultimately escape criminal sanctions by entering alcohol education, alcohol treatment, or other programs that permit judgment or prosecution to be deferred.⁵

Diversion programs generally lead to dismissal of a conviction after successful completion of the program by the offender and can prevent or delay the offense from appearing on an offender’s public driving record. For example, in Maryland, a conviction leading to a diversion program (i.e., probation before judgment) is documented in a segregated (i.e., isolated) record that is not available to the public or insurance companies as part of the person’s driver record.

Alcohol-impaired driving legislation and sanctions have historically targeted offenders with multiple convictions. Less attention has been paid to so-called first offenders (those with no prior history of an alcohol-impaired driving conviction on their public driving record), and this limited focus has been on those actually convicted for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI). APS penalties mandated under per se regulations for failing the breath alcohol test (APS failure) or refusing the breath alcohol test (APS refusal) and probation before judgment are often excluded from alcohol-impaired driving statistics. This narrow focus only on convictions thus underestimates the prevalence of alcohol-impaired driving.

It is a widely held belief among the legislative and judicial branches of state government that most first offenders criminally convicted of an alcohol-related traffic offense are overindulging “social drinkers” who may have had only a single isolated drinking and driving episode that resulted in arrest. This belief often translates into lighter sanctions for first offenders.⁶ For example, drivers who are perceived to be first offenders are more often granted probation,^7,8 are less likely to receive jail sentences,⁷ and are more likely to receive education⁹ for a conviction than are multiple offenders. Moreover, the general perception of the first-time offender is someone who is not a problem drinker, is generally law abiding, can be reasoned with, and only needs education.⁶ These assumptions may help to explain the lighter sanctions afforded first offenders. However, they appear to be inconsistent with published estimates that a person can drive while impaired by alcohol 200 to 2000 times before being arrested once^10–15 and empirical evidence suggesting that many so-called first-time alcohol-impaired drivers are problem drinkers¹⁶ and are unlikely to be reformed through educational interventions.⁶

In a literature review sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jones and Lacey¹⁷ concluded that first and multiple DWI offenders share many similar characteristics and that a number of studies could not distinguish the characteristics of first from multiple offenders.^7,16,18–22

Despite empirical evidence that the first documented alcohol-impaired driving conviction on a public driving record is often not the first occurrence,²³ offenders who are convicted for the first time are commonly afforded light sanctions. Some arrested or convicted drivers manage to have their driver records completely expunged, and many state motor vehicle administration offices routinely purge driving records after a set number of years.²⁴ In some states, including Maryland, evidence that a driver received a conviction and diversion program is held as a segregated or sealed record and may be excluded from the driver record upon successful completion of program requirements. Moreover, some DUI offenders receive administrative sanctions but are not convicted criminally, and others may have their charges reduced to a lesser or nonalcohol-related offense through plea bargaining. Given these factors, combined with the low probability of arrest, it is reasonable to assume that the typical so-called first-time offender will have had an extensive history of alcohol-impaired driving by the time an offense is documented in the state’s department of motor vehicles or criminal record systems.²⁵

In addition to the lighter judicial and legislative sanctions afforded those offenders apprehended for a “first” offense, a closer look at recidivism rates of DUI offenders with nominally 1, 2, or even 3 or more documented arrests is warranted because, in reality, such drivers may in fact have regularly engaged in drinking and driving without developing a documented conviction record, as a consequence of at least 6 factors: (1) having a low probability of arrest, (2) states’ practice of expunging or purging driver records, (3) plea bargaining to lesser offenses, (4) offenders receiving administrative sanctions but not criminal convictions, (5) states’ using segregated driver records, and (6) excluding alcohol-related violations from official records among diversion-program participants. Thus, criminal and administrative records commonly used to evaluate risk for recidivism underrepresent the actual violations among the drinking and driving population.

We sought to compare the risks of committing a new alcohol-impaired traffic offense (of any type) among drivers with 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more prior violations. Specifically, we were interested in determining whether the risk (rate) of new offenses among drivers who had a single prior violation was closer to the risk for multiple offenders or to drivers with no prior alcohol-related offenses……..” read the entire study for its full value.

There’s a new controversy in Texas involving the online public school curriculum called CSCOPE, which already has been the subject of heated debate and state legislative hearings.

There are reports now that students were made to wear Muslim burqas as part of their public school lessons.

CSCOPE has been facing criticism over its alleged Islamic and anti-American bias. It is a “curriculum management system” now used in 80 percent of Texas classrooms. It recently was the subject of a heated inquiry that culminated in hearings conducted by the Texas Senate Education Committee chaired by state Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston.

According to a joint press release by Patrick, State Board of Education Chairwoman Barbara Cargill and CSCOPE representatives, CSCOPE ultimately agreed to “significant changes.” But it is unclear when the changes will take place and whether or not the pledged cooperation is legally binding or simply to mollify critics.

WND contacted Patrick’s office but has been unable to obtain documentation confirming whether CSCOPE compliance is required or optional.

He did release a statement: “Be assured we are working on this issue as is the SBOE almost every day. The hearing was step one, the letter step two. The only thing that is binding from a legislative standpoint is legislation. We are working on those issues based on what we are discovering now. We are doing our job, one that must be thorough and will take time.”

CSCOPE has come under fire for controversial curriculum content, including accusations of multiple lessons showing a pro-Islamic agenda. CSCOPE representatives had claimed that such content had been “taken out of context” or that they were “old lessons that have since been taken down.”

CSCOPE proponents have denied the existence of such lessons, or, when faced with documentation, have dismissed critics’ claims as exaggerations.

However, in Lumberton, Texas, this week, high school girls were made to wear burqas as part of a CSCOPE study of Islam.

One student quoted the teacher as saying, “We are going to work to change your perception of Islam.”

The teacher in the burqa lesson, according to a student, also said, “I do not necessarily agree with this, but I am supposed to teach you that we are not to call these people terrorists anymore, but freedom fighters.”

Critics argue that this should not be a teacher’s role, and are concerned that CSCOPE curriculum appears agenda-driven.

According to a student in the class, the lesson was to teach about the life of women in Islam. The burqa exercise focused on fashion and did not include the fact that in many Muslim communities, women who appear in public without a burqa face being beaten, imprisoned or murdered by family members, vigilante groups or even the state.

At the end of class, the students were assigned to write a paper about Egypt. According to one student, they were instructed to discuss “how Egypt was a good country until democracy took over, and that things were finally corrected when the Muslim Brotherhood came into power.”

Muslim women are portrayed as liberated in CSCOPE literature. In a lesson titled “Thinking About Sexuality” that utilizes a series of film clips, students are asked, “What do the women portrayed in these film clips think Islam teaches about sexuality? How are their thoughts similar or dissimilar to your own ideas about sexuality?”

Under the subheading “For further discussion,” select quotes from Muslim women are included for student reflection.

A women named Harlina Halizah says: “I don’t think it is fair to say that Islam restricts your sexual desire. It is more directing it toward a more purposeful kind of life.”

Halizah goes on to say, “I don’t need to be liberated. I was born a free person.”

Students are then asked: “Do you agree? What would you define as the criteria for being ‘liberated’?”

Another Muslim female prototype, Zainah Anwar, is quoted under the subheading “Thinking about Gender Relations.”

“We found that it is not Islam that discriminates against women, it is not the verses in the Quran, it is the way that these verses have been interpreted by men, living in patriarchal societies who wish to maintain their dominance, and their superiority and control over women.”

To get a better understanding, WND reached out to Mary Bowen. Bowen is a teacher of more than 30 years with a masters degree in curriculum who recently testified before the Senate Education Committee about CSCOPE’s academic deficiencies and its politically driven nature.

Commenting on a picture in the curriculum of smiling Muslim children, Bowen said, “I wonder if they have been taught that the women they are representing cannot drive, cannot be schooled, that they do not have legal birth records and if they are accused of rape/sexual impropriety their father can legally take them out on the patio and kill them like a dog without legal penalty.

“I just wonder if they are being taught the real story behind the burqa.”

CSCOPE has been heavily criticized by parents and teachers for other controversial content. One lesson from a CSCOPE social studies unit teaches students that communism is the highest attainable economic system and that capitalism is merely an evolutionary step on the ladder. The lesson calls communism a system in which “all people work together for everyone” It shows a man climbing stairs towards a communist pinnacle. Capitalism is defined as a system in which “all people strive to fulfill their own needs and wants” and is at the bottom of the included handout.

A civics unit defines political viewpoints and paradigms on a continuum. Fascism/Nazism are regarded as “conservative,” in spite of the fact that they dictate total state control and ownership of resources, while conservatism favors less government and wide economic and political freedom.

Republicans are defined as favoring “big business over labor unions.”

Democrats are defined this way: “Will spend more tax dollars on education to benefits [sic] each individual.”

CSCOPE oversight legislation is pending in the Texas House of Representatives and took less than a week to gain the full support of a majority of representatives.

In the meantime, teachers are legally required under CSCOPE contracts to teach only CSCOPE lessons and are not permitted to discuss content with parents and others in the community.

A Texas lawmaker is launching an investigation after a teacher reportedly invited female students to dress up in Islamic garb and then told her classroom they should call Muslim terrorists – freedom fighters.

State Sen. Dan Patrick, chairman of the senate education committee, told Fox News he is very disturbed by the photograph as well as reports that students were exposed to a story that blamed Egypt’s turmoil on democracy – rather than the Muslim Brotherhood.

“Parents are very sensitive to any issue that seems to be anti-American – that blames democracy for some sort of trouble in the world,” he said.

A Texas mom became outraged after she discovered a Facebook photo of her child wearing Islamic garb.

The lesson on Islam was taught in a world geography class at Lumberton High School. The teacher brought burqas and other Islamic clothing for the female students to wear. They were also assigned to write an essay based on a Washington Post story that blamed Egypt’s troubles on democracy – instead of the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I am outraged,” one of the parents, who asked not to be identified, told Fox News. “I felt my blood pressure go through my head.”

The parent said she was not aware of the lesson until she discovered a photograph of her 14-year-old daughter wearing a burqa on Facebook.

“As parents we should have been made aware this and I felt like the line had been crossed,” she told Fox News. “Christian kids who want to pray have to do it outside of school hours – yet Islam is being taught to our kids during school hours.”

Sen. Patrick said he understands why the parents are upset.

“Could you imagine if someone asked a Muslim student to dress up as a priest,” the senator asked. “The parents of a Muslim student might be rather upset about that.”

The young girl’s father wondered why the teacher was giving children lessons about Islam in a geography class.

“She went from learning about Mexico to learning about Russia to learning about Islam,” he said. “Islam is not a country. Islam is not a continent.”

The parents said they confronted their daughter and told her to explain exactly what she had been taught.

“They were asked about their perception of Islam,” she said. “Most of the class said they thought about terrorism. And her response was, ‘we’re going to change the way we perceive Islam.’”

The teacher reportedly told the students that she did not necessarily agree with the lessons –but she was required to teach the material.

The Lumberton Independent School District released a statement to Fox News defending the class.

“The lesson that was offered focused on exposing students to world cultures, religions, customs and belief systems,” the statement read. “The lesson is not teaching a specific religion, and the students volunteered to wear the clothing.”

The school district said Judaism and Christianity were also part of the lesson. However, the parents said Christianity was not discussed in the classroom.

“The Christian perspective was not taught,” she said. “They went in-depth into Islam and I’m not comfortable with it.”

The district said the photograph does not reflect the entire aspect of the lesson.

“The lesson encompassed diversity education so students receive a firm understanding of our world and why people are motivated differently,” the statement read.

The parents said they immediately contacted the principal of the high school who defended the program and said it was required under CSCOPE – a controversial electronic curriculum system that provides online lesson plans for teachers.

“The principal told me it was world geography and they have to learn this stuff,” she said.

However, the school district said the lesson taught at the high school was not part of written CSCOPE lesson.

“This is the normal answer from every school using CSCOPE,” said Janice VanCleave, a vocal critic of the program and the founder of Texas CSCOPE Review. “They are definitely promoting the Islamic religion.”

VanCleave said the trouble is that teachers are not giving students the full story.

“They are not telling students how these young women are treated in this religion,” she told Fox News. “In the Islamic countries women are not treated well at all.”

Last month, evidence was presented at a state hearing showing that CSCOPE offered a number of lessons about Islam.

One particular lesson instructed teachers to provide classroom readings of selected texts from the Koran.

Students were also taught that Allah is God.

CSCOPE offered no comparable lessons on Christianity or Judaism, VanCleave told Fox News.

“I do think CSCOPE promotes the Islamic religion,” she said. “I don’t think it’s right to be proselytizing the Islamic religion in our schools.”

Patrick said every time they’ve asked CSCOPE leaders about the lessons on Islam, lawmakers were told “those were old lessons.”

“In this particular case – there’s a photograph and there’s a letter from the school district and there’s another companion lesson,” he said. “You start adding these issues up and it puts CSCOPE under the microscope more.”

‘1.6 Billion Rounds Of Ammo For Homeland Security? It’s Time For A National Conversation’

The Denver Post, on February 15^th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice. It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. As reported elsewhere, much of this purchase order is for rounds forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month. 1.6 billion rounds, therefore, would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years. In America.

Add to this perplexingly outré purchase of ammo, DHS now is showing off its acquisition of heavily armored personnel carriers, repatriated from the Iraqi and Afghani theaters of operation. As observed by “paramilblogger” Ken Jorgustin last September:

“[T]he Department of Homeland Security is apparently taking delivery (apparently through the Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico VA, via the manufacturer – Navistar Defense LLC) of an undetermined number of the recently retrofitted 2,717 ‘Mine Resistant Protected’ MaxxPro MRAP vehicles for service on the streets of theUnited States.” …

“These MRAP’s ARE BEING SEEN ON U.S. STREETS all across America by verified observers with photos, videos, and descriptions.

“Regardless of the exact number of MRAP’s being delivered to DHS (and evidently some to POLICE via DHS, as has been observed), why would they need such over-the-top vehicles on U.S. streets to withstand IEDs, mine blasts, and 50 caliber hits to bullet-proof glass? In a war zone… yes, definitely. Let’s protect our men and women. On the streets of America… ?

“Seriously, why would DHS need such a vehicle on our streets?”

Why indeed? It is utterly inconceivable that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is planning a coup d’etat against President Obama, and the Congress, to install herself as Supreme Ruler of the United States of America. There, however, are real signs that the Department bureaucrats are running amok. About 20 years ago this columnist worked, for two years, in the U.S. Department of Energy’s general counsel’s office in its procurement and finance division. And is wise to the ways. The answer to “why would DHS need such a vehicle?” almost certainly is this: it’s a cool toy and these (reportedly) million dollar toys are being recycled, without much of a impact on the DHS budget. So…why not?

Why, indeed, should the federal government not be deploying armored personnel carriers and stockpiling enough ammo for a 20-year war in the homeland? Because it’s wrong in every way. President Obama has an opportunity, now, to live up to some of his rhetoric by helping the federal government set a noble example in a matter very close to his heart (and that of his Progressive base), one not inimical to the Bill of Rights: gun control. The federal government can (for a nice change)begin practicing what it preaches by controlling itself.

And … remember the … Sequester? The president is claiming its budget cuts will inconvenience travelers by squeezing essential services provided by the (opulently armed and stylishly uniformed) DHS. Quality ammunition is not cheap. (Of course, news reports that DHS is about to spend $50 million on new uniforms suggests a certain cavalier attitude toward government frugality.)

Spending money this way is beyond absurd well into perverse. According to the AP story a DHS spokesperson justifies this acquisition to “help the government get a low price for a big purchase.” Peggy Dixon, spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center: “The training center and others like it run by the Homeland Security Department use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises.”

At 15 million rounds (which, in itself, is pretty extraordinary and sounds more like fun target-shooting-at-taxpayer-expense than a sensible training exercise) … that’s a stockpile that would last DHS over a century. To claim that it’s to “get a low price” for a ridiculously wasteful amount is an argument that could only fool a career civil servant.

Meanwhile, Senator Diane Feinstein, with the support of President Obama, is attempting to ban 100 capacity magazine clips. Doing a little apples-to-oranges comparison, here, 1.6 billion rounds is … 16 million times more objectionable.

Mr. Obama has a long history of disdain toward gun ownership. According to Prof. John Lott, in Debacle, a book he co-authored with iconic conservative strategist Grover Norquist,

“When I was first introduced to Obama (when both worked at the University of Chicago LawSchool, where Lott was famous for his analysis of firearms possession), he said, ‘Oh, you’re the gun guy.’

“I responded: ‘Yes, I guess so.’

“’I don’t believe that people should own guns,’ Obama replied.

“I then replied that it might be fun to have lunch and talk about that statement some time.

“He simply grimaced and turned away. …

“Unlike other liberal academics who usually enjoyed discussing opposing ideas, Obama showed disdain.”

Mr. Obama? Where’s the disdain now? Cancelling, or at minimum, drastically scaling back — by 90% or even 99%, the DHS order for ammo, and its receipt and deployment of armored personnel carriers, would be a “fourfer.”

The federal government would set an example of restraint in the matter of weaponry.
It would reduce the deficit without squeezing essential services.
It would do both in a way that was palatable to liberals and conservatives, slightly depolarizing America.
It would somewhat defuse, by the government making itself less armed-to-the-teeth, the anxiety of those who mistrust the benevolence of the federales.

Hours after CIA Director John Brennan took the oath of office—behind closed doors, far away from the press, perhaps befitting his status as America’s top spy—the White House took pains to emphasize the symbolism of the ceremony.

“There’s one piece of this that I wanted to note for you,” spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at their daily briefing. “Director Brennan was sworn in with his hand on an original draft of the Constitution that had George Washington’s personal handwriting and annotations on it, dating from 1787.”

Earnest said Brennan had asked for a document from the National Archives that would demonstrate the U.S. is a nation of laws.

“Director Brennan told the president that he made the request to the archives because he wanted to reaffirm his commitment to the rule of law as he took the oath of office as director of the CIA,” Earnest said.

The Constitution itself went into effect in 1789. But troublemaking blogger Marcy Wheeler points out that what was missing from the Constitution in 1787 is also quite symbolic: The Bill of Rights, which did not officially go into effect until December 1791 after ratification by states. “We’re coming” to Israel

President Barack Obama will visit Israel later this month, the 20th, even if Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu fails to put together a governing coalition beforehand. “We’re going,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at a briefing for reporters Friday, March 9. In answer to a question, he said, “The formation of the Israeli government is the responsibility of Prime Minister Netanyahu and other senior officials of the Israeli government…”

Secretary of state John Kerry thought otherwise when he skipped a visit to Israel as not worthwhile until a government is in place. (Netanyahu’s deadline for forming a government has been extended to March16.)
DEBKAfile reports from its Washington sources that President Obama’s calculations for making the trip are a lot more complicated than Kerry’s. According to some Israeli circles, none of them are good news for their country.
He arrives less than a month after the last Six-Power (US, Russia, UK, France, China and Germany) nuclear discussions with Iran ended in Kazakhstan. After those talks, US and Western media trumpeted “an unusual sense of optimism” or more cautiously allowed “a faint and perhaps fleeting light at the end of one of the world’s most durable tunnels.”

Western sources predicted on the strength of these assessments that the follow-up to Kazakhstan in April, shortly after Obama’s talks in Jerusalem, would be devoted to “cementing that progress,” which translated into rewarding putative nuclear concessions by Iran with the easing of economic sanctions.
However, according to DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources, this diplomatic fluff, while representing elation in Washington, London, Moscow, Paris and Berlin, caused serious disenchantment in Jerusalem, which viewed it as a smokescreen for concessions to, and not by, Iran.
They have found that the “fleeting light” appearing at the end of the Iranian nuclear tunnel obscures three dangerous US concessions to Tehran:

1. President Obama has given in to the Fordo uranium enrichment plant continuing to operate instead of shutting down, as demanded by Israel – even though its function is to turn out 20 percent pure (near-weapons grade) uranium;
2. He has even consented to the Iranians continuing to manufacture uranium to that level;
3. Washington has dropped its insistence on Iran sending out of the country its stocks of 3.5-5 percent enriched uranium.
With these gains, the Iranian negotiators must have been laughing all the way home from their talks with the six big powers on 26-27 of February and crowing over what one Israeli official called “Tehran’s huge success and Israel’s total defeat.”

Conscious of how these concessions to the Islamic Republic are received in Jerusalem, it is no wonder that President Obama brushed off the invitation to address the Israeli Knesset, where lawmakers would likely put him on the spot. He has chosen instead to deliver a speech at Jerusalem’s Convention Center, so as to deliver his message straight to the Israeli public.

By going over the heads of Israel’s government and parliament to face a less informed audience, he believes he can get away with sweet-talking his surrender to a nuclear Iran.
Former military intelligence chief, Amos Yadlin stepped in with a timely comment last week when he said that an Israeli strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities would be no more than a one-night operation.

‘Eric Holder: Drone strikes against Americans on U.S. soil are legal’

“It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States,” Holder replied in a letter yesterday to Paul’s question about whether Obama “has the power to authorize lethal force, such as a drone strike, against a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, and without trial.”

Paul condemned the idea. “The U.S. Attorney General’s refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening – it is an affront the Constitutional due process rights of all Americans,” he said in a statement.

“Were such an emergency to arise, I would examine the particular facts and circumstances before advising the President on the scope of his authority,” he concluded.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, an attorney and Judiciary Committee member, told The Washington Examiner last month that the drone policy so far outlined by the administration is too vague.

“That has the potential to swallow the rule,” Lee said after the drone program white paper was leaked. “If you’re going to regard somebody as presenting an imminent threat of an attack on the U.S. simply because you have concluded that they are an ‘operational leader’ or they are involved in planning an attack in one way or another, you find yourself giving way to much discretion to the government.”

Lee said that the White House should release the formal legal analysis underpinning the drone program. “We know that in some instances where the government has released its legal analysis, it gets it wrong,” he said.

Investigator describes setup as infrastructure for attack

One of the investigators who worked on a report about terror training camps operating inside the United States describes the network as no more or less than an infrastructure for attack.

WND previously reported on a documentary called “Homegrown Jihad: Terrorist Training Camps Around the U.S.,” and how it offers evidence that “Muslims of America” operates a series of training camps in the U.S.

Jason Campbell is project manager for the Christian Action Network, which was behind the training camps investigation.

He described for WND some of his visits to the camps, which have been located in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma Michigan, Colorado, California and Washington.

“The one that really gets you concerned is in Georgia,” he said. “You go down a road and all of a sudden it’s just woods, and there are two roads that go straight down to the camp. It’s dark because of the trees. And one of the roads is named Mecca and the other Medina.”

“If there ever was an infrastructure for terrorism, this is it,” he told WND.

He said the camps themselves are in remote areas with few neighbors, and mostly self-sufficient, such as having their own water supply and often food stores. They also are closed to outsiders, with the women sometimes taking off-campus jobs, but little other interaction.

“If you died there, they bury you there,” he said. “There are no permits from the Department of Health…”

Campbell also said the camps he’s visited have a mosque and frequently the living conditions are “miserable.”

The locations are run by Muslims of the Americas Inc., a tax-exempt organization, and it has been directly linked by court documents to Jamaat ul-Fuqra. The organization operates communes of primarily black, American-born Muslims throughout the U.S. The investigation confirmed members commonly use aliases and intentional spelling variations of their names and routinely deny the existence of Jamaat ul-Fuqra.

The group openly recruits through various social service organizations in the U.S., including the prison system. Members live in compounds where they agree to abide by the laws of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, which are considered to be above local, state and federal authority.Click here to watch the trailer!

U.S. authorities have probed the group for charges ranging from links to al-Qaida to laundering and funneling money into Pakistan for terrorist activities. The organization supports various terrorist groups operating in Pakistan and Kashmir, and follows Sheikh Mubarak Gilani.

He boasts of conducting “the most advanced training courses in Islamic military warfare.”

The jihadist organization is thought to be responsible for nearly 50 attacks on American soil, but the U.S. government refuses to list it among foreign terrorists.

In a recruitment video captured from Gilani’s “Soldiers of Allah,” Gilani states in English: “We are fighting to destroy the enemy. We are dealing with evil at its roots and its roots are America.”

Jamaat ul-Fuqra is thought to have been responsible for the beheading murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan.

The documentary called “Homegrown Jihad: Terrorist Training Camps Around the U.S.” provides compelling evidence of how “Muslims of America” operates, and already has caught the attention of neighbors and local police officials.

Gilani’s American headquarters is in Hancock, N.Y., where training is provided to recruits who are later sent to Pakistan for more jihadist paramilitary training, according to law enforcement authorities.

A Justice Department report to law enforcement agencies, prepared in 2006, provides a glimpse into how long Jamaat ul-Fuqra or “Muslims of America” has been operating inside the U.S.: “Over the past two decades, a terrorist group known as Jamaat ul-Fuqra, or ‘Community of the Impoverished,’ has been linked to multiple murders, bombings and various other felonies throughout the United States and Canada.”

Gilani’s “communes” are described by law enforcement as “classically structured terrorist cells.”

As WND reported, a covert visit to a Jamaat ul-Fuqra encampment in upstate New York by the Northeast Intelligence Network found neighboring residents deeply concerned about military-style training taking place there but frustrated by the lack of attention from federal authorities.

Campbell told WND the compounds raise his concern because of their proximity in Georgia to a prison, in New York to a water supply and other such circumstances.

He said the information about the camps has come from law enforcement sources, from the organization’s own investigation, and, tellingly, from information from insiders who have left.

‘WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT ISRAEL’S INTELLECTUAL WARRIORS—DR. MARTIN SHERMAN EXPLAINS THE RATIONALE OF THIS STRATEGIC INTELLECTUAL ENDEAVOR’

AK: Dr. Sherman, you set up the Israel Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in early 2011. Can you give our readers a quick overview of what the IISS is about, what its aims are and what the rationale for its inception was?

MS: The Israel Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a non-profit organization (US tax exempt 501(c)(3) entity) established to promote joint values shared by Israel and the United States.

At IISS we firmly believe in the practical value and moral validity of the founding principles and ideas of Zionism, and in the imperative of preserving their essence and renewing their vitality.

Moreover, IISS sees a significant confluence between the ideals on which the Zionist movement was established, and those articulated by America’s founding fathers and enshrined in the US Constitution.

In this regard, IISS activities are guided by the sentiments espoused by Justice Louis Brandies in 1915:

“Let no American imagine that Zionism is inconsistent with Patriotism. Multiple loyalties are objectionable only if they are inconsistent….Every American Jew who aids in advancing the Jewish settlement …, [even] though he feels that neither he nor his descendants will ever live there, will likewise be a better man and a better American for doing so. There is no inconsistency between loyalty to America and loyalty to Jewry”.

AK: I understand that since then, perhaps the major difficulty you are experiencing is in raising sufficient funding required to achieve the impact you believe the IISS can and should make on Israeli policy making. What makes IISS different, and why should it merit support from benefactors who are already supporting pro-Israel causes?

MS: Although at IISS we are keenly aware that there are numerous worthy pro-Israeli organizations, engaged in laudable efforts on behalf of the Jewish state and the Jewish people, our initiative is a distinctively ambitious strategic endeavor which is qualitatively different from other ongoing pro-Zionist activities that I know of.

While the success of many other commendable initiatives will—by their very nature of their objectives—be focused on specific issues and therefore have a limited localized impact both in terms of scope and duration, IISS adopts a comprehensive strategic approach. In other words, it attempts to direct its energies into channels that will have the potential to “leverage” the efforts of its operation by producing “knock-on” effects that will be both wide ranging and long lasting on Israel’s overall strategic orientation.

AK: Don’t similar institutions already exist in Israel?

MS: Not really.

Perhaps the best testimony to the lack of – and the necessity for – an entity such as IISS, are the endorsements of the IISS initiative by prominent public figures in Israel and abroad, who feel that there is a pressing need for precisely such an enterprise.

AK: So who has endorsed your initiative?

MS: The IISS initiative have been endorsed by an impressive array of prominent public figures, from Israel, the US and EU. The list includes:

AK: Getting back to what you mentioned earlier about IISS’ aims of impacting Israel’s overall strategic approach, isn’t that a little overly ambitious for a nascent private organization?

MS: Well, clearly it is an extremely ambitious undertaking but that does not make it any the less imperative.

Its success depends on correctly identifying, and then concentrating efforts on what I would call strategic“tipping points” and targeting strategic “epicenters” to achieve the “leverage” and “knock-on” effects that I mentioned earlier.

AK: So what would IISS diagnose as such strategic “tipping points” and “epicenters”?

MS: Almost without doubt, IISS sees the accelerating delegitimation of Israel and the clear failure of the nation’s public diplomacy to contend effectively with the alarming degradation of the county’s image abroad, as the issue requiring the most urgent and comprehensive attention.

Indeed, the damaging effects of the delegitimization of the country can scarcely be overstated. It is the source of devastating corrosion of Israel’s national cohesiveness and coherence – critically compromising its ability to sustain itself as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

This is something that impacts far more than “aesthetics” of Israel’s image.

In fact, as I pointed out in one of my previous interviews on this blog, some pundits have warned that Israel’s ineffective response to the threat “not only restricts Israel’s strategic options, it would be detrimental to its ability to survive in an increasingly intolerant and hostile world which thinks [little of ] sacrificing Israel’s vital interests or even the state itself”.

AK: I take it you agree with this dire assessment?

MS: Definitely.

The ongoing delegitimization and its public diplomacy failure (which are in fact two sides of the same coin) does in fact “restrict Israel’s strategic options”. By limiting Israel’s perceived freedom for formulation of national policy, it imposes constraints – real or imagined – on its scope of choices across a wide range of fields – both military and civilian.

These extend well beyond conventional security issues and include direct and indirect influences on housing policy and population distribution, the ability to protect the environment, the security of Israel’s transport infrastructure (particularly land and air) as well as the safety of those utilizing them – to name but a few.

Accordingly, eliminating – or considerably reducing – these constraints, by effectively countering the delegitimization offensive (i.e by qualitatively enhancing Israel’s public diplomacy performance), will enhance the spectrum of perceived policy options available to decision makers in numerous areas of national life, where unwarranted international anti-Israel opprobrium comprise an artificial constraint.

It is for this reason that the IISS considers combating the ravages of the delegitimization and contending with the ineffectiveness of Israel’s public diplomacy is not only a crucial and immediate diplomatic imperative in itself, but an objective that will generate significant positive effects well beyond the scope of its immediate diplomatic focus.

This is precisely what I mean by generating “leverage” and “knock–on” effects by focusing on strategic “tipping points” and “epicenters”

AK: Yes, I see what you mean. But what do you foresee if such enhancement of public diplomacy is not forthcoming?

MS: Well, if the current situation is allowed to continue unchecked and unchallenged, grave consequences are inevitable.

AK: Such as?

MS: Consider the following:

The ongoing degrading of the legitimacy of Zionism and Israel as the nation-state of the Jews will unavoidably erode the morale of the country—particularly the youth.

Inevitably this will erode the motivation to defend the country against its enemies militarily, and to repulse its detractors diplomatically, as well as erode the resolve and robustness with which such defense is pursued.

Indeed are disturbing indications that this malaise is undermining the organizational culture of the IDF where the notion of “victory” increasingly is depicted as a cognitively invalid concept and as an operationally unrealistic – indeed even undesirable –objective.

The lack of conviction as to the moral validity of the Zionist cause – and hence the lack of confidence as to moral vindication of actions in its defense –is undoubtedly one of the major, arguably the major, reason for Israel’s dismal performance on the international stage and for the severe degradation of its international standing.

AK: A grim prognosis. But can an organization like yours rise to the challenge?

MS: Of course, as an NGO the IISS cannot play a direct role in formulating and implementing practical policy. Accordingly, it sees its role as that of a catalyst for sparking and invigorating the public discourse on issues of crucial importance on the national agenda.

To discharge this “catalytic” role effectively, IISS must seek the elements that have the most far-reaching and fundamental impact on this public discourse and devise approaches as to how to apply the greatest leverage to them.

AK: Can you be a little more specific?

MS: Certainly. To be effective IISS needs to be provocative and controversial.

However, this means more than merely “blowing off steam”. Provoking productive public controversy requires inducing a response from ideological adversaries, who would otherwise prefer to disregard any opinions discordant with their own—and thus avoid any open discourse that might challenge their positions in the eyes of their followers. Indeed, it is only by compelling them to “engage” can their fallacies and hypocrisies be revealed and repudiated.

After all, It is virtually axiomatic that one cannot be victorious over one’s adversaries unless one engages them in combat. If one’s adversaries are ideological they must be engaged on ideological combat.

So unless this is achieved, you essentially end up “singing to the choir”. Accordingly, IISS considers it vital to formulate its positions in a manner, convey them through channels, and propagate them among audiences that its ideological adversaries cannot apriori ignore, dismiss or discredit because of its mode of formulation, or physical location of its origin, or the organizational affiliation of its authors.

AK: Would the primary thrust of your effort be directed principally toward foreign sources of delegitimization?

MS: No, not at all. One of the major sources – and arguably most pernicious one – is domestic:The post/anti-Zionist academics in the Israeli universities –a.k.a. tenured radicals.

Indeed, entrenched faculty in Israel academe have in many respects become the epicenter of the forces for the delegitimization of Israel and the demonization of anyone who dare supports it. In the past I have expressed my concern publicly on this matter (see By thy own hand, Academic Freedom and the Shape of the Earth , Dishonest or incompetent? , and most recently A Giant Pall of Shame ); as have others who share my sense of foreboding ( see Academics on rampage , Mount Scopus or Mount Olympus?and Academic Brainwashing: Anatomy of Israel Higher Education, 2010 (translated from the Hebrew in “Maariv”). AK: How bad is the situation?

MS: Several recent studies have shown that virulent anti-Zionist themes have become an overriding – or at least extremely common – feature of much of the teaching and research conducted in the social sciences and humanities faculties throughout Israeli academe. Indeed, in many ways it has become accepted as the sole – or at least dominant – standard for academic wisdom.

This cadre of anti-Zionist academics have become – whether directly or indirectly – the dominant provider of intellectual input for many individuals and institutions – including those in Jewish communities across the globe. This in turn has resulted in the exacerbation of hostility towards Israel among its enemies, and an erosion of support among its friends.

Unless this phenomenon is confronted, curtailed and counteracted, no form of Israeli advocacy can be effective for:

It undercuts all pro-Israel messages and amplifies all anti-Israel ones.
It lends credence to the venom of Israel’s foes and undermines the credibility of Israel’s friends.
It serves as “proof”of Israeli fiendish malfeasance and is exploited to dismiss any evidence disputing this.

After all, if Israeli professors/intellectuals are saying this, it must be true

AK: How can this problem be addressed?

It is a problem that can be only addressed in an effective and timely manner from within the existing academic frameworks – i.e. by of taking the battle to the adversary’s territory.

AK: It sounds like you are applying the principles of the“Ben Gurion Doctrine” for military warfare of “taking the Battle to the Adversary’s territory” for conducting intellectual warfare.

MS: There is a definite parallel.

It is crucially important that such facilities be set up inside, and that their intellectual output emanate from within, existing mainstream academic establishments. There are several reasons for this.

Although there are a number of noteworthy –and praiseworthy –endeavors to set up alternative independent centers outside the regular academic system, the public impact of such institutes will almost inevitably be limited. As I hinted at previously, the reason for this is that they will be vulnerable to accusations by opponents of being biased and ideologically tainted because of their geographical location, institutional affiliation (or lack thereof) and so on.

As a result their work is often intentionally ignored –or if that fails – disdainfully denigrated precisely because they lack “establishment credentials”.

Moreover, a significant time period is likely to be required for such nascent centers to acquire adequate public stature and prestige, creating a detrimental delay in bringing their influence to bear on the public discourse.

AK: So how do you deal with that?

MS: By contrast, locating a substantial policy research center with a countervailing pro-Zionist orientation within, or interfacing with, the current academic establishment will do much to circumvent – or at least greatly reduce – these difficulties, since neither its geographic location nor its organizational affiliation can be used to disqualify or disparage its work.

Accordingly, IISS seeks to amass sufficient resources to enable it to offer an existing academic institution and/or its faculty members, sufficiently attractive financial inducements to facilitate its inclusion of affiliation with such an institution . This the real challenge at the moment. We are convinced we have the right message and sufficient motivation. What we need now is the ability to acquire an appropriate “megaphone”.

AK: How would the IISS differ from say the various “Monitors” that are active today, such as the NGO Monitor, Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) , MEMRI, IsraCampus and Israel Academia Monitor (IAM)?

MS: The IISS sees it role extending beyond that of a monitor.

There are a number of organizations doing sterling work in exposing vindictive and malevolent slander being directed against Israel from both domestic and foreign sources –like the ones you have just mentioned. However – by their very mandate as a monitor – they are reactive bodies rather than proactive. They respond to the initiatives of Israel’s detractors rather than embark on initiatives of their own.

Moreover, monitors–again by their very nature– do not deal with formulation of policy proposals or strategies for the nation. So, while IISS will indeed devote effort to rebutting unwarranted attacks on Israel and Zionism, a considerable portion of its efforts will be devoted to formulating proactive policy paradigms for the conduct of the affairs of the nation—mainly, but not necessarily exclusively, in the realm of security (broadly defined) and foreign policy.

AK: So wouldn’t you be merely just another “think-tank”?

MS: Again, as before, IISS sees it role extending beyond that of the usual “think-tank”.

It will be more orientated to policy prescription than policy analysis. It will focus more on the efficacy of the durable impact it can generate on the public discourse rather than on the volume of works it produces or the publicity of the events it holds.

As mentioned at the outset, IISS firmly believes in the value and the validity of the founding principles and ideas of Zionism and in the imperative of preserving their essence and renewing their vitality.

Accordingly, I suppose we could say that IISS sees its role as a policy entrepreneur promoting Zionist-compliant policy proposals over a range of strategic issues in both on domestic and foreign policy.

As such IISS operations will involve rigorous mobilization of the accepted tenets of the disciplines of political science, international relations and strategic studies to generate a Zionist- compliant conceptual envelope for the formulation of the nation’s strategic agenda. This will then be vigorously promoted—again subject to funding–as a viable alternative to current determinants of Israeli policy, which often appear misguidedly myopic and demonstrably dysfunctional, reflecting what can only be described as “intellectual surrender” by the Israeli decision-making echelons to the dictates of anti-Zionist political-correctness.

AK: As we near the end of the interview, what would you like to say in summation?

In a recent article entitled, “On the need for an avant-gardein strategic studies”, prominent scholar Professor Louis Rene Beres wrote: “Many of the principal assumptions associated with current strategic studies need to be challenged by a new intellectual vanguard, by an eager avant-garde.”

This is precisely what IISS strives for — to fill a glaring gap in Israel’s intellectual landscape which will provide a nucleus within, or interfacing with, the existing academic establishment around which countervailing pro-Zionist elites can coalesce, and raise a banner around which the hitherto hesitant can rally to mount a challenge to dominant—but dysfunctional—paradigms of today.

AK: Dr. Sherman, it is always a great honor, as well as a pleasure, to associate with such a clear thinker. A visionary of sorts. Indeed, supporting IISS embodies the ultimate support for Israel – for Zion’s sake.

To be sure, the usage of certain ethic slurs – by those outside the group – are generally not meant as compliments. Nevertheless, this is not always the case. Be that as it may, when it comes to the Jews all bets are off. Two sheets to the wind. “Free for alls” are generous ways to describe how people regularly spout off about “the Joos” and their out-sized power. Former Senator Chuck Hagel, Barack Obama’s nominee for US Defense Secretary, will likely get confirmed by the Senate when his appointment comes up for a vote.

Hagel has been criticized for his negative attitude toward Israel, and he has made statements about Jews that expose him to the charge of being an anti-Semite.

Perhaps his nastiest remark is that a “Jewish lobby” controls the State Department. The very absurdity of this remark suggests to the present writer that Hagel may indeed be a visceral Jew-hater.

It’s common knowledge that the Arab lobby and American oil interests have long dominated the State Department. Besides, State’s support of the PLO-Palestinian Authority makes nonsense of Hagel’s remark about the “Jewish lobby”—a remark appropriate to a knave, not a Senator of the United States.

That being the case, perhaps an insidious motive is lurking in Hagel’s canard? Perhaps his remark about the “Jewish lobby” is a not so subtle attempt to stamp American Jews with the odious charge of “dual loyalty”?

I recall another Senator who fertilized this ground some ten years ago: Ernest Hollings (D-South Carolina). Writing in the Charleston Post and Courier, Hollings accused then President George W. Bush of ousting Saddam Hussein to protect Israel. Indeed, he blamed Jewish officials and pundits, namely, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and Charles Krauthammer as the culprits behind America’s involvement in the Iraqi quagmire. Once again, American Jews were accused of “dual loyalty.”

Frankly, I had to laugh at Hollings and at any Jew who reacted defensively to his anti-Semitic slander. If any U.S. Senator or former Senator is concerned about “dual loyalty” among American Jews, I suggest he first examine the phenomenon of “dual citizenship” among American immigrants, which is widespread in the United States. I wish all immigrants to this country good luck, and I hope they’ll follow the example of my parents who raised a large family of patriotic Americans: one awarded a Silver Star in the Second World War for saving several American soldiers trapped behind German lines in North Africa, and was later wounded in the European campaign.

The first thing to be noted about immigrants who become citizens of the United States is that, strictly speaking, dual loyalty violates American law! U.S. Code section 1448(a) prescribes the following oath for all naturalized citizens—suffice to mention only two clauses: “I do solemnly swear (1) to support the Constitution of the United States; (2) to renounce and abjure absolutely and entirely all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which the applicant was before a subject or citizen.”

Unfortunately, the law has simply been ignored. An untold number foreign-born Americans are also citizens of one or another hostile Islamic country. The imams of many mosques in the United States preach hatred of Jews, Christians, and Western Civilization. They preach hatred of America where they enjoy the rights of American citizenship—rights which now seems to include the right to undermine America. A country whose citizens know only of rights without corresponding duties is nothing more than an infantocracy!

But ponder this. According to the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” This clearly implies that Americans can be citizens of only one state and can vote in only one state, even if they have homes in two states.

In contrast, under existing law and practice, whereas Americans can be citizens of two countries, with residences, say, in Santo Domingo and Boston, and can thus vote in both American and Dominican elections, Americans with homes in New York and Boston cannot vote in both places!

Here let me cite the distinguished (and departed) Professor Samuel Huntington: Who are We? The Challenges to America’s National Identity (2004). Dual citizenship, he writes, encourages thousands of such individuals not only to remit tens of billions of dollars to their relatives, localities, and businesses in their country of origin, but to help finance the campaigns of their homeland politicians. How’s that for “dual loyalty”?!

Huntington also informs us that many American-born Hispanics, especially Mexicans, do not identify with America or American culture but rather with the culture of their homeland. In one 1992 study, when children of immigrants in Southern California and South Florida were asked, “How do you identify, that is, what do you call yourself?”—among Mexican American children born in the United States, only 3.9 percent responded “American” compared to 28.5 percent to 50.0 percent of those born in America with parents from elsewhere in Latin America.

Hence it is not surprising that, in another study, a representative example of the American public viewed Hispanics as less patriotic than Jews, blacks, Asians, and Southern whites.

Now consider the Hispanization of Miami. Huntington points out that as early as 1980, Spanish was not just the language spoken in most homes; it was also the principle language of commerce, business, and politics. But since language is the medium of culture, no one should be surprised that Miami has become a culturally Hispanic city. Indeed, according to Huntington, by the late 1980s the Cubans in Miami had created their own banks, businesses, media, and voting blocs, which dominated the economy and politics and from which non-Hispanics were excluded. “They’re outsiders,” as one successful Hispanic put it.

What has occurred in Miami, says Huntington, is occurring in the Southwest, most significantly in Los Angeles. In 2000, 64 percent of the Hispanics in Los Angeles were of Mexican origin, and 46.5 percent of Los Angeles residents were Hispanic, while 29.7 percent were non-Hispanic. In 2003 for the first time since the 1850s, a majority of newborn children in California were Hispanic. Many identify themselves as Americans; many do not. Is it any wonder that Barack Obama has adopted a liberal position on the wave of Hispanics illegally entering the United States?

Incidentally, another Samuel Huntington, an ancestor of the one I have been citing, was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, which Abraham Lincoln deemed the soul of the America Constitution. Dual citizenship thus had special significance for Huntington. Perhaps a copy of his book should be sent to the former Senator from Nebraska, an American war veteran who seems to have forgotten what he was once fighting for?”

Some diseases are incurable. This is just the way it is. But at least in the physical realm, scientists work diligently to tackle as many as possible, even if not fast enough for many in dire need. However, when it comes to anti-semitism – and the canard of the “Jewish Lobby” is wholly and irredeemably anti-semitic – there is no twisting and turning out of it. There is NO cure.

“FEMA clearly is fast becoming the Obama administration’s secret in-country military operations that is scaring citizens out of their wits. A video narrated by Dale Bohannan has popped up online with photos of what first appear to be porta-potties. But on closer inspection, the black plastic containers are what the narrator reveals to be as many as 125,000 outsized casket liners that are in no way there to service the needs of live American citizens!

Bohannan drove down a newly cut road through a soybean field in Madison, Georgia and spoke with the field’s owner, who told him the Center for Disease Control (CDC) owned these coffin liners and was leasing his land for their storage! “These are cremation containers for multiple bodies–patent # 5,425,163–burnable, (and) generate very little pollution. They are multi-use cremation containers,” says an unidentified commenter to this video. Further information claims that the lids have been modified so they could be STACKED easily because “Americans can withstand the notion of many bodies being thrown into these coffins far better than they could the sight of bulldozers tossing bodies in big holes as was seen after the large tsunami overseas.”

Images of these black, disposable coffins cement in the minds of many Americans the notion that our government is not to be trusted and that our government is not really looking out for us, but rather is looking out for the higher ups, the politicians, and the elites in Washington, D.C.

The first Amendment guarantees “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” But the newly updated manual for the 3rd Infantry Division, 1st Brigade Combat Team now stationed in various American states includes, for the first time, protocols for subduing civil unrest and crowd control of US citizens. A federal manual being used by FEMA and the Joint Terror Task Force, “…gives the government the authority to step in and IMMEDIATELY crush any civil disturbance or turmoil which might occur. Civil disturbances are defined as riots, acts of violence, insurrection, unlawful obstruction or assemblage or other disorders prejudicial to public law and order.” But who, exactly, will define “unlawful obstruction or assemblage” or “disorders prejudicial to public law and order?”

In 1968, Operation Garden Plot was initiated by the Department of Defense for the purpose of creating “…military preparations for suppressing domestic civil disturbance…” But Americans have begun to ask who our government is preparing to fight and for what reasons! Why did Janet Napolitano’s Department of Homeland Security need 1.6 billion bullets and 7000 fully automatic rifles? (By the way, when purchased for the DHS, these rifles are called “personal defense weapons.” When you and I buy SEMI-automatic rifles, we are accused of owning “assault weapons.”)

What does she need all of those weapons for, all of those bullets? Who is the DHS preparing to kill?”

‘Syrian no-man’s land bordering Israel and Jordan is up for grabs’

The four Syrian mortar shells exploding on the Israeli side of the Golan Saturday, March 2, flashed a signal to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that the moment is at hand to step in and decide how to dispose of the expanse of southern Syrian bordering on northern Israel. This urgency sent Defense Minister Ehud Barak flying to Washington Friday March 1, to meet new US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel next Tuesday.

At the top of their agenda for discussion this time will not be Iran but, DEBKAfile’s military sources report, the disappearance, except for scattered military units, of Bashar Assad’s ruling presence and army from the Syrian areas abutting on Israel and Jordan. The collapse of Assad’s defense lines on these two borders generates a new strategic situation of major import.
Most Israelis, including their media, are too deeply engrossed in the ins and outs of Netanyahu’s struggle to form a coalition government to notice that a no man’s land has opened up on the Syrian Golan, the Horon province (where the Syrian uprising first erupted two years ago), and the Yarmuk River dividing Syria from Jordan.
At the same time, the Assad army is all but gone from there and the Syrian rebels are constrained from moving into the abandoned territory by three considerations:

1. They are short of the manpower for seizing and holding it;

2. Their commanders have evidently not caught onto the brilliant international, strategic opportunity waiting to drop in their laps;
3. The Druze community in their mountain fortresses overlooking the territory is poised to prevent any outsider takeover.
Israel is confronted with a choice between leaving the long-menacing areas overlooking the Sea of Galilee and its north-eastern regions to an unknown fate – or asserting control itself.
At this point, Israel’s armed forces still have three options:
a) Directly capturing dominant points in those no-man’s land areas as guarantees of a say in who eventually dominates them.
b) Military support for a Druze land grab.
c) Military collaboration with Jordan to control the fate of the abandoned lands abutting both their borders.
There is still time to pre-empt developments that would be detrimental to Israel’s security: One such development would be a deal being reached on how to dispose of the abandoned territory between the Assad government and Syrian opposition in the talks opening in Moscow Tuesday, March 5.
This deal would open the door for ensconcing on the Israeli border Muslim extremists, such as the pro-Al Qaeda factions fighting with the Syrian rebels.
Barak’s mission to Washington is to align Israel-US positions on these and other urgent topics with the new US defense secretary. DEBKAfile’s Washington sources are skeptical about his chances of success in view of the Obama administration’s decision to pass the resolution of the Syrian question to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This leaves the initiative up to Netanyahu. He has shown exceptional skill of late in ducking clear decisions on such matters. However, indecisiveness at this moment could cost Israel dear in the future.”

The most effective way to gauge an action, whether or not it is meant to inflame and incite, is to break it down into its base components.

On the one hand, comedians, cartoonists and entertainers in general mostly go for broke. In line with this thinking, there is always an issue of freedom of expression and speech. Its basis must be protected, but it has to be a level playing field. It isn’t.

Specifically, it is absolutely the case that certain groups are totally off limits and taboo, at least if one cares to keep their head atop their shoulders. Hence, an omerta descends from above, handed down from the PC police. Don’t dare touch these species – keep your lips zipped and your artistic expression stifled.

Furthermore, while blacks are (thankfully) no longer tied to trees, and with lynch mobs no longer at their throats, at the same time, poking fun at said history would not only be unacceptable, but it would bring the wrath of the left down on ones head. So too with other “protected” groups, as gays/transgenders “merit” a policy of special treatment.

On the other hand, Jews are the only group where it is acceptable, even laudable to target, as “open season” is painted on their backs. This is the case, despite an unprecedented amount of anti-semitic canards and attendant blood libels swirling the globe, not unlike in the lead up to the Holocaust. Not fair. Foul play!

Now, let us mosy down to the most protected group of all, albeit the most dangerous. In other words, the group which needs a full throttle public airing (from all “bully” pulpits…in some cases a necessary thrashing) to protect Americans/westerners, is also a “no go” verbal zone.
