To state that this blogger has more than a healthy respect – and out-sized appreciation – for the engineering prowess of Israeli techies is hardly an overstatement. Not only is she in awe of their technological marvels, but she understands all too well what it takes for them (intellectual-wise) to get from there to here. And as a parent of two electrical engineering sons, well, it more than warms the heart. Awesome feats of ‘magic’.

That being said, it is imperative to take a step back from admiring their incontestable (even garnering grudging praise from those who wish Israel nothing but ill will), incredible genius and place it in proper perspective. Immediately.

So, spend a little time looking on in wonderment and don’t forget to thank G-d for their abilities. But do make sure to keep your eyes focused on the inherent limitations of missile defense, especially as an antidote to the real deal – VICTORY!

In other words, there are two core components to Israel’s sustained viability and eventual survival, and they are not mutually exclusive. To be sure, the leadership’s goal should always be victory, however, this is not on the foreseeable horizon. Tragically, there is more than enough demonstrable support to back this claim up :

“In the aftermath of Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense, considerable credit is being heaped upon Iron Dome. Technically, of course, such praise is warranted. Without a timely deployment of this advanced system of active defense, innocent Israeli populations could have suffered substantially greater harms.What is not warranted, however, is a reflexive or visceral extrapolation from Pillar of Defense to the emerging nuclear threat from Iran. The threats are very different. This is because any system of active defense will inevitably have “leakage.” This includes Iron Dome but also Arrow, the longer-range Israeli shield that would ultimately need to function against incoming Iranian missiles.Although a less than 100% reliability of interception may be more-or-less acceptable in the face of shorter-range and exclusively conventional explosive rockets launched from Gaza, this less-than-total level of reliability could not be tolerable in the event of any WMD (chemical, biological, or nuclear) missile attack from Iran.

Plainly, in the very worst-case scenario of an Iranian long-range rocket attack bearing nuclear warheads, not even a single incoming missile could be allowed to reach its Israeli target. Yet, for the moment, at least, no conceivable system of active defense could assure such a conspicuously perfect level of protection.

For Israel, the core inference of this strategic limitation is the lack of wisdom in relying too heavily upon narrow technological solutions. Iron Dome, Arrow and the still in development, David’s Sling (aka Magic Wand), can contribute mightily to Israel’s defense and deterrence postures. But this contribution is less than a true panacea. Moreover, no system of missile defense could be of any use against Iran-assisted acts of nuclear terrorism.

Even after Pillar of Defense, Israel’s remaining strategic options against a steadily nuclear-powered Iran must include preemption, or an expectedly unavoidable last-resort to defensive first strikes. Under relevant international law, if the nuclear danger posed by Iran were potentially existential, and also “imminent in point of time,” these Israeli strikes could be appropriately justified as “anticipatory self-defense.” Any such justification, going back to an 1837 case known in jurisprudence as “The Caroline,” would be authoritatively consistent with customary international law.

These binding rules are identified at Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice.  Moreover, this critical consistency could be enlarged by Iran’s ongoing and unhidden disregard for the Genocide Convention (1948), a foundational multilateral treaty that prohibits not only actual crimes against humanity, but also “conspiracy to commit genocide.”

To be sure, because the human and material costs to Israel of any preemption against Iran would now be staggering, this option could only be rational in those cases where intelligence had reliably revealed an impending Iranian nuclear aggression.

In the final analysis, the correct strategic lesson to be drawn from Iron Dome’s technical success, and also from the inherent limitations of all active defenses, is multi-faceted. Above all, Israel must prepare to do everything possible to deter an already-nuclear Iran, even if that country’s core decision-makers were not expected to meet the standard tests of rationality in world politics. Here, even an Iranian leadership that would value certain religious preferences more highly than national survival could still be dissuaded from launching nuclear first-strikes against Israel. This would be accomplished by posing suitable threats to certain principal Iranian religious institutions and infrastructures.

More likely, however, the leaders of a nuclear Iran would remain subject to the usual threats of deterrence, threats based upon presumptions of rationality. With this in mind, Israel’s task will also be to assure these leaders that any Iranian excursions into nuclear violence would unhesitatingly elicit at least parallel forms of nuclear reprisal. In this connection, it would be important to assure the Iranians that (1) Israel’s nuclear weapons were not “merely” counterforce targeted; (2) these nuclear weapons were effectively invulnerable to enemy first-strikes; and (3) these weapons were fully capable of penetrating Iran’s own active defenses.

To succeed with such assurances, Israel would have to take early steps at ending its longstanding posture ofdeliberate nuclear ambiguity, steps designed to begin to take the Israeli bomb out of the so-called “basement.” By implementing very selective and partial moves toward nuclear disclosure, Israel could significantly enhance the credibility of its nuclear deterrence posture. Although counter-intuitive, the reason and rationality of any such implementation would be dictated by the primal need to convince Iran that Israel’s weapons were both available and usable. Ironically, if Iran were to believe that Israel’s nuclear weapons were “too large” or “too destructive,” they might then become less subject to Israeli nuclear deterrence.

All of these essential enhancements of Israeli nuclear deterrence would have to be accompanied by apt forms of cyber-defense or cyber-war. There might also be some residual strategic benefit to Israel in exploring any still-remaining chances for regime change in Tehran. But this path could quickly prove to be a double-edged sword. There would be no assurances that any Iranian successor regime would necessarily turn out to be less Jihadist, or more inclined to peace with Israel. For this successor regime, authentic diplomacy and negotiations could still be anathema.

Israel needs to continue with its impressive progress on diverse active defenses, especially Iron Dome, Arrow, and David’s Sling. Under certain foreseeable circumstances, Israel could sometime be facing simultaneous rocket attacks from both assorted terror groups (Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon), and belligerent states (Iran). With regard to any contemplated Iranian nuclear strike, Arrow’s main function would not be limited to physical protection of otherwise unprotected Israeli noncombatants. Rather, where it is deployed to protect Israel’s own “hard” nuclear targets, its corollary purpose would be to convince Iran that it can never hope to prevent an unacceptably destructive Israeli nuclear retaliation.

Taken together with improved nuclear deterrence and cyber-defense, Israel’s active defenses represent an utterly indispensable component of the country’s national security doctrine. Considered only by themselves, however, no matter how advanced and technically sophisticated, these defenses can never suffice.”

Although more than worth their weight in gold they can never be leak-proof. They are adjunct therapies. Nothing more, nothing less.

And that, dear readers, is the upshot. It only takes a tiny leak to pierce through all the layers, of even the best missile defense systems in the world. And that leakage will be enough to make the difference between an Israel which will survive or perish. 

With Israel tinier than the size of NJ (or even Lake Michigan), would anyone in their sane mind stake their lives on such odds for survival?

US forces in the region, Israel, Turkey and Jordan were all braced  Monday night, Dec. 3 for action against Syria in case Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered his army’s chemical warfare units to go into action against rebel and civilian targets his own country. None of the Middle East capitals are talking openly about this eventuality to avoiding causing panic.
However, oblique references to the peril and preparations for action came from US officials during Monday. White House spokesman Jay Carney said: “We have an increased concern about the possibility of the regime taking the desperate act of using its chemical weapons.”  Such a move “would cross a red line for the United States.”

Without going into specifics, Carney added: “We think it is important to prepare for all scenarios. Contingency planning is the responsible thing to do.”
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Prague was slightly more specific: Syrian action on chemical weapons remains a “red line” for the Obama administration, she said, and “would prompt action from the United States.”

Regarding contingencies, DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the American force in Jordan and Jordanian units, who have been training for two months in tactics against Syrian chemical warfare units, are on a high state of preparedness. So, too, are the three special US command centers set up in Turkey, Jordan and Israel for coordinating such operations.

An American official “with knowledge of the situation” told Wired Magazine that “engineers working for the Assad regime in Syria have begun combining the two chemical precursors needed to weaponize sarin gas.”

Anchored opposite the Syrian shore is the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group with 2,500 Marines. Facing it is the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s naval task force which too has hundreds of marines on its decks.

DEBKAfile’s sources quote high-ranking officers in the Israel Defense Forces’ Northern Command as saying: “The coming hours and days are extremely critical for Syria. The situation on our northern front could blow up any moment.” They did not elaborate.

Later Monday, as the United Nations regional humanitarian coordinator for Syria, Radhouane Nouicer announced the pullout of nonessential international staff “because of the security situation,” Secretary Clinton flew into Brussels from Prague to discuss with NATO foreign ministers the deployment of Patriot anti-missile batteries at 10 points on the Turkish-Syrian border – a massive number.
NATO sources took note of the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s reply to the spreading reports. He said that the government “would not use chemical weapons, if it had them, against its own people under any circumstances.” This statement carried no promise about using such weapons against external forces, whether American, Turkish, Jordanian or Israeli.

In Istanbul, meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters at the end of his one-day visit: “What we are concerned about is Syria’s future. We don’t want the same mistakes to be repeated in the near future.” He went on to say: “We shall remember how some regimes supported the militants in Libya and how the situation ended with the killing of the American ambassador in Libya.”
This was meant by the Russian president as a warning to the US not to get involved in the Syrian crisis as it did in Libya.”

“As NATO in Brussels gave the go-ahead Tuesday night, Dec. 4, for the deployment of Patriot surface-to-air missiles to protect Turkey against Syrian missiles,DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources reported that convoys of the Syrian army’s chemical weapons units headed out of Damascus under cover of dark and turned north up the road to Aleppo. Their destination is not yet known.
The convoys were ferrying self-propelled cannons for firing shells loaded with poisonous sarin gas.
Syrian President Bashar Assad had evidently decided to ignore the warnings President Barack Obama issued Monday night that there would be consequences if he or anyone in Syria resorted to chemical warfare and each would be held accountable.

Our sources report that the Syrian ruler is aparently gambling dangerously on the Americans holding back from attacking the convoys as long as they deploy unconventional weapons, and would only react when they are used.

He is also taking advantage of the heavy winds, rain and cloud over this part of the eastern Mediterranean and counting on the weather to obstruct military operations against his chemical weapons units.

By the time the weather clears some time Thursday, the units will be in place in battle formation. Meanwhile, bombing the convoys in windy weather could cause the deadly gas to spread out of control in unpredictable directions.
In Brussels, a NATO official announced that the alliance had agreed to augment Turkey’s air-defense capabilities by deploying Patriot missiles to Turkey.
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that by the time the missiles arrive, the Syrian chemical weapons units will almost certainly have reached their pre-planned positions. Furthermore, the Patriot air defense systems are not designed to counter artillery and would therefore be unable to stop shells loaded with poison gas.”

‘Obama’s memo on “insider threats”

26 November 2012: “On the day before Thanksgiving, Barack Hussein Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum, or an unofficial directive to the heads of departments and agencies under the executive branch. This Presidential Memorandum, the text of which is only 183 words, directs agency and department heads to establish a program “to deter, detect, and mitigate actions by employees who may represent a threat to national security.”

There is, however, a more important aspect to this memorandum that will be undoubtedly missed by many who report on it. It is reflected by a word that appears toward the end of the directive and should be considered the “key” to understanding the intent and action of Barack Hussein Obama. The word is “centrally,” and when it is considered in the context of Obama’s agenda we’ve seen being implemented over the last four years, it is chilling.Much like all of Obama’s other directives, Executive Orders and findings, there is a disturbing level of ambiguity contained within this memorandum. One could correctly state that the obvious intent of this directive is to stop government employees from leaking classified information that would endanger the safety and security of our nation. While true, there appears to be a deliberate lack of specificity concerning the exact elements that constitute such an “insider threat.”

The key to understanding this memorandum is to understand that we are witnessing the greatest consolidation of power and control under the Executive branch of the government in recent U.S. history. This consolidation of power makes it possible for a select number of highly political “czars” and appointed officials to observe, control and report on the activities of people within their various departments to the Executive branch. This process creates a closed system of surveillance that cannot be easily penetrated by other branches of our government.

Accordingly, it becomes a self-policing network that has the ability to silence critics and individuals opposing a particular agenda or activity, even if such dissent is lawful. Taken to its extreme, it gives Barack Hussein Obama the ability to redefine what constitutes a threat to the government, including treason. It’s no longer about the rule of law and one’s allegiance to the United States. It’s now about allegiance to the agenda of the Executive branch, assured by active surveillance of government employees by Obama’s hand-picked appointees.

This memorandum quietly inserts yet another plank in the framework for absolute control by Barack Hussein Obama. It is he, not laws enacted by congress or the workings of the judicial branch, who will now determine who and what constitutes an “insider threat.” The mechanisms for reporting such threats are now in place, and actual or perceived threats to our government are to be identified and reported on by the very people he appointed to key government positions. It is the very essence of “Big Brother” within the government itself.

Everyone needs to wake up and understand exactly what’s happening not only in the U.S., but across the world. We are witnessing the consolidation of power that historically precedes a war for absolute control.”

‘Texas Threatens To Lock Up Advocates Of Obama’s Unconstitutional NDAA’

“Written by Texas representative Lyle Larson, the Texas Liberty Preservation Act says that “…Texas shall not provide material support or participate in any way with the implementation of Sections 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 within the legal boundaries of the state of Texas.”

Incorporated into the NDAA at the demand of Barack Obama, these sections allow the president “…to indefinitely detain, without charge, persons including United States citizens and lawful resident aliens, whether or not they are captured within the confines of the United States.”  That is, anyone Barack Obama considers a terror threat to the United States or the American public may–at his sole discretion and direction–be rounded up and incarcerated by members of the U.S. military.

The NDAA not only authorizes this exercise of police powers on American soil by the U.S. military; it allows the president to detain“until the end of hostilities” anyone he believes to have “substantially supported” al Qaeda, the Taliban, or “associated forces.”  Those subjected to this arbitrary exercise of presidential power would face an indefinite period of imprisonment with no right of habeas corpus, no right to trial, no right to present proof of innocence, and no method of appeal. It makes for an utter abrogation of constitutional protections.

But State Representative Larson will have none of it as he seeks to shield the people of Texas from a law that Republicans in the U.S. Congress could not wait to pass.  “Sections 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 are in direct contravention to the limits of federal power as stated in Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution and are in violation of the Texas constitution,” writes Larson in his Act.

The prospective Texas law relies for its authority and legitimacy on the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “The Tenth Amendment…provides the United States federal government authorization to exercise only those powers delegated to it in the Constitution (Article 1, Section Eight) and nothing more,” writes Larson. And the NDAA was in no way created according to “…[the] powers delegated to [congress]   in the Constitution.”

In April, Virginia passed HB 1160, making it illegal for anyone to accommodate the NDAA in that state. And as of November 19th, 16 states have refused to permit the creation of ObamaCare exchanges within their borders. With the corrupt, Marxist Obama administration in charge in Washington DC and the weak-kneed Republican Party a thoroughly undependable champion of individual liberty, it will be up to Republican-run state legislatures and non-RINO Governors to halt the progress of the imperial presidency.

The American public must make their voices heard at the state level on every important issue.”

Aside from like-minded terror juntas permeating the UN’s halls of disgrace/disrepute, as well as Euro appeasers in toto (with the exception of the Czech Republic & small outlier countries), much more was at play, regarding the acceptance of Abbas’s terror state into the “community of nations”, albeit with “non-member” status. I apologize, dear readers, for the re-use of the introductory Albert Einstein quote, cited over a year ago at the start of my August 18, 2011 column “Come September,” in which I dealt with the previous unilateral Palestinian bid for statehood.

Although the prior attempt was made in the Security Council for full UN membership, while this time it is being mounted in the General Assembly for non-member status, the citation has lost none of its relevance.

The root of all evil

For anyone with an iota of common sense and shred of intellectual integrity, one thing should be glaringly obvious: It is patently impossible to solve the Palestinian problem by the very kind of thinking that created it – i.e. the idea of Palestinian statehood.

After all, what created, or at least elevated the Palestinian problem to its present prominence was Israel’s Oslo-related recognition of the Palestinians as a legitimate national entity.

Accordingly, it can only be resolved – or at least reduced to its former insignificance – by retracting that recognition.

Although over half the present population has no real firsthand recollection of the kind of political realities that prevailed in pre-Osloian Israel, for those of us who do, there can be little doubt that while the Palestinian issue was an important item on the national agenda before the 1993 accords, it had nowhere near its current intensity, severity or centrality.

True, there was the first intifada which began in 1987. But by 1993, it had all but petered out, leaving Palestinian society dispirited, exhausted and fractured, with the number of Palestinians murdered by internecine fratricide equaling the number killed by Israeli security forces. True, there were also Israeli casualties, but these were barely 15 percent of those in the post-Osloian second intifada (2000-2005) in which over 1,000 Israelis died.

Although there were several incidents of the use of firearms in the pre-Oslo intifada, Palestinian terror attacks were largely limited to “cold” weapons – knives, axes and stones – and with Molotov cocktails.

By contrast, Israeli concessions and withdrawals in the post-Oslo era provided the Palestinians with access to high grade explosives which culminated in the horrendous wave of suicide attacks in the decade following recognition of Palestinian claims for statehood.

Complicity with duplicity

Yet despite the accumulating evidence, successive Israeli governments – from 1993 onward – have all steadfastly refused to read the writing on the wall.

They have all stubbornly recoiled from drawing the unavoidable conclusions: The greater the concessions, the greater the carnage; the greater the readiness to accede to Palestinian political claims, the greater Palestinian refusal to accept Israel as the Jewish nation-state.

Instead, all governments did quite the opposite! With varying degrees of enthusiasm (or reluctance) they all elected to pursue a policy of Israeli complicity with Arab duplicity.

They all proved unwilling/unable to jettison the disastrously failed Osloian paradigm.

They all proved they could neither muster nor marshal the necessary resolve and intellect to formulate and propagate, with any effectiveness, a convincing comprehensive counter-Osloian paradigm – devoid of the notion of Palestinian statehood west of the Jordan River.

They all proved they had neither the political acumen nor the ideological commitment to mount a sustained assault on the Palestinian narrative, its factual authenticity, moral validity and political legitimacy. They all proved incapable of undermining the manifestly duplicitous Palestinian case for statehood or dispelling its material, intellectual and emotional underpinnings – or at least proved disinclined to do so.

This ongoing capitulation to what is commonly perceived as the dictates of political correctness – no matter how dramatic their divergence from factual correctness/ political truth – is producing perilous predicaments for Israel, for both its physical security and its political viability. Their gravity can hardly be overstated.

Bibi, Bogie and Bennie

Sadly, and despite the high hopes pinned on it after the calamitous term of the Olmert administration, the current government has hardly proved its mettle. Indeed, in many ways, it may yet prove to be one of the most – arguably, the most – disappointing and demoralizing one yet.

True, it does have several impressive achievements to its credit. In most of the country –apart from the South – it has kept terror attacks down to almost imperceptible levels; it has navigated the Israeli economy better than most, if not all, countries in the industrialized world; it prevented the Palestinian membership bid at the UN last September, it resisted pressure to apologize to Turkey for the use of lethal force on the Mavi Marmara when it attempted to breach the maritime quarantine of Gaza and managed to deter a second flotilla from a similar endeavor; it has kept unemployment – perhaps the most pernicious of all social ills – down to enviably low levels relative to most societies in the West.

None of these are trivial accomplishments and all are worthy of praise. Yet, despite the inclusion of vehement critiques of the two-state-paradigm, the administration of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has neither been able to prevent Israel’s strategic slide down the slippery slope toward the untenable borders that paradigm entails, nor to propose a persuasive countervailing one.

This is precisely what may well cause many to despair; precisely why the performance of this government has been so disappointing, disillusioning and demoralizing – and hence, potentially so devastatingly detrimental.

Bar-Ilan’s bitter fruits

Both the indecisive outcome of the fighting in Gaza last week, and the emerging diplomatic debacle in the UN on Thursday, can in many ways be traced back to Netanyahu’s regrettable volteface in the speech he delivered at Bar-Ilan University shortly after his reelection as prime minister. In it he endorsed, for the first time – in strident contradiction to his long-held position – the possibility of a Palestinian state.

Although he attempted to “hedge” his acquiescence with various unrealistic reservations and far-fetched restrictions, he had, in a stroke, capitulated strategically, and fundamentally transformed the debate from one over whether there should, or should not, be a Palestinian state, to one over what the characteristics of the Palestinian state should be.

The crucial point to grasp is that once the prospect of Palestinian statehood is accepted, so is the permanence of a collective Arab entity in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. This in turn implies that any ground operation into Gaza must necessarily be temporary.

But, since experience in recent years has demonstrated unequivocally that the long-term security of the South can only be secured by seizing and holding the areas from which attacks are launched, temporary incursions, without a permanent IDF presence, will be inadequate, hence unsatisfactory and hence open to criticism of being inadvisable and imprudent.

Thus, despite the preposterous proposal that Gaza could be transformed into the Mideast Hong Kong – recently regurgitated in an op-ed, “ Hong Kong in Gaza,” by Maj.-Gen. (res.) Yitzhak Gershon – its continued existence as a self-governing Arab entity precludes providing the South of the country any semblance of normalcy (see the Arafat citation above).

Temporary lulls are increasingly unacceptable, making life in the South increasingly untenable both economically and emotionally.

If this continues much longer, depopulation of the South and the denudation of the Jewish presence there is an evermore tangible possibility.

Unless there is a realistic prospect of permanently ceasing the attacks, why would any responsible parent consider remaining and bringing up their children there? By adhering to Oslo-compliant paradigms and eschewing political alternatives that envision the deconstruction of Gaza and resettlement/rehabilitation of its Palestinian population elsewhere, military campaigns will always be driven by a rationale that dictates objectives which are limited, temporary and hence, in the eyes of the other side –inherently unsuccessful.

Whistling in the dark?

Since the summer of 2006, Israel has waged three large-scale campaigns against lightly armed Arab militias. In each case, it has been seen (rightly or wrongly) as incapable of imposing a surrender and coercively silencing their fire.

This is credibly conveyed, and widely perceived as an operational failure of the IDF, and hence a victory for its adversaries – which precipitates a commensurate enhancement of status and influence, augmentation of quantities and upgrading of quality of weaponry, making them more menacing to more Israelis.

Accordingly, the cognitive restrictions entailed in eschewing political paradigms that reject the inevitability of Palestinian statehood necessarily preclude IDF victory, however impressive the damage it inflicts on the battlefield, and bestow the aura of victory on his foes.

This is precisely what happened in Gaza last week, and any attempt to portray the result as an Israeli victory is little more than “whistling in the dark.”

After all, from its point of view, Hamas emerged with impressive achievements relative to the status- quo ante:

– Demonstrable concessions for its fisherman and farmers,

– Cessation of the targeted killings,

– International recognition, diplomatic triumphs and visits by foreign dignitaries.

Incredibly, all this was attained without any undertaking to cease the smuggling of weapons.

By contrast, Israel has made notable concessions. It has not only given Hamas respite to regroup, rearm and redeploy, but to:

– Tighten its counter-intelligence to constrict information on targets

– Improve concealment and hardening of targets

– Progress towards the establishment of an air defense system and equipping their rockets with multiple warheads (activated by simple spring-release mechanisms already being proposed on Pakistani and Chinese sites) to overwhelm Israel’s anti-missile defenses.

Moreover, Hamas now has more time and greater prestige to help forge coordination with the Hezbollah in the north, the Salafists in Sinai and like-minded elements in Judea and Samaria for multi-frontal assaults on Israel.

‘On Bibi’s & Liberman’s watch?’

The same sense of intellectual surrender, or at least, resignation, that flows from adherence to Oslo-compliant policy paradigms has precipitated the looming debacle at the UN. As I write this column, more and more reports are coming in of countries that have reversed their former decision to oppose the bid.

It would be an error to underestimate the gravity of this UN vote. Every brick laid in any “settlement,” every coercive measure undertaken by the IDF could be deemed “war crimes” and become the basis for indictment at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Indeed, the very presence of the IDF in areas across the 1967 lines could be construed as foreign invasion of the sovereign soil of a recognized (albeit non-member) state.

Suddenly, vast new frontiers for the denigration and demonization of Israel have opened up and the prospect of a Palestinian state, with all its attendant perils, has become far more tangible – and as one senior official was quoted as saying – “on Netanyahu’s and Liberman’s watch.”

So while the earlier Gaza cease-fire proved the government incapable of delivering the goods militarily; this week’s UN vote proves it cannot deliver the goods diplomatically.

Inexcusable, inexplicable, infuriating

What makes the impotence so infuriating and inexcusable is the fact that the government had well over a year to prepare for the Palestinian initiative.

The first, and most immediate measure that should have been taken was to convey unequivocally to the Palestinians – and to their UN supporters – that if it is independence they demand, then independent they will have to be. Accordingly, persistence with their unilateral bid will bring Israel to terminate the supply of every service and all merchandise that it provides them today. In other words, no water, no electricity, no fuel, no postal services, no communications, no port facilities, no tax collection or remittances will be supplied by Israel.

If conducted with credible resolve this will either compel – or at least, could have compelled – the Palestinians to rescind their independence drive with massive loss of face, or to launch a huge and humiliating appeal for urgent international assistance, exposing their total dependence on the very entity from which they seek independence.

Either way, it will demonstrate the futility of the endeavor for Palestinian statehood, which almost two decades after the Oslo Accords and massive investment has not produced anything but an untenable, divided entity crippled by corruption and cronyism, with a dysfunctional polity, an illegitimate president, an unelected prime minister and a fragile economy that, with its minuscule private sector and bloated public one, is unsustainable without massive foreign infusions of funds and the largesse of its alleged “oppressor.”

Undoubtedly, there will be howls of horror that such a policy will precipitate a “humanitarian crisis.” And indeed, it will in all likelihood cause significant hardship. But such accusations should be countered by the offer of generous relocation grants for any Palestinian weary of the suffering his leaders have wrought on him and his family, and who wishes to seek a better life elsewhere.

Dark days ahead

Regrettably, however, the government of Israel has elected to act differently. The most robust measure brandished was a threat to suspend tax transfers for – gasp – a full two months and – another gasp – to deduct the money it is actually owed by the Palestinians (almost a billion shekels for unpaid electricity bills).

However, soon after the threat, came an announcement that the government was actually planning to transfer the sum of 200 million shekels to help the recalcitrant Palestinian Authority pay salaries it owes its employees. No kidding!

Bizarre huh? There are dark days ahead, very dark.

The question is how much more blood will be spilled trying to resolve the Palestinian problem with the same kind of thinking that created it.”

‘NOW OBAMA WANTS YOUR 401(K)’

Treasury, Labor on path to nationalize retirement

NEW YORK – “Two years ago, as WND reported, the Obama administration was proceeding with a novel way to finance trillion-dollar budget deficits by forcing IRA and 401(k) holders to buy Treasury bonds by mandating the placement of government-structured annuities in their retirement accounts.

Remarkably, those financial professionals specializing in private retirement savings and the U.S. citizens investing in private retirement plans now face the possibility the Obama administration and its allies on the political left will impose rules and regulations that effectively abolish the private retirement savings and investment markets.

Recent evidence suggests government officials continue to eye the multi-trillion dollar private retirement savings market, including IRAs and 401(k) plans, eyeing the opportunity to redistribute private retirement savings to less affluent Americans and to force the retirement savings out of the private market and into government-controlled programs investing in government-issued debt.

Government takeover?

An Investment Company Institute study published this month found that U.S. retirement assets totaled $18.5 trillion at the end of the second quarter 2012, of which 3.5 trillion was in IRAs and $5.1 trillion was in 401(k) plans.

Since 2010, the U.S. Treasury Department and the Department of Labor have been holding combined hearings on various plans designed to introduce government-mandated retirement plans and investment options, including government annuities invested primarily in U.S. Treasury debt, into the private retirement savings market.

“This hearing was set up to explore why Americans are not saving as much for their retirement as they could,” explained National Seniors Council National Director Robert Crone, describing a recent Treasury-Labor hearing held in the Labor Department’s main auditorium.

“However it is clear that his is just the first step toward a government takeover. It feels like the beginning of the debate over health care and we all know how that ended up.”

‘Automatic IRA’

With the issuance of the White House 256-page Budget Proposal for Fiscal Year 2013, the Obama administration endorsed “Automatic IRAs,” a plan introduced into Congress in 2010 by Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass, and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., in which private companies would be automatically enrolled into government-mandated IRAs, forcing those businesses to contribute on behalf of their employees a “default amount” equal to 3 percent of an employees pay, unless an employee specifically opts out of the plan.

The FY 2013 Budget proposal notes that currently 78 million working Americans, roughly half of the work force, lack employer-based retirement plans.

According to testimony given by David C. John of the Heritage Foundation to the House Committee on Ways and Means on April 17, most of the 78 million working Americans not participating in employer-based retirement plans are part-time employees of smaller businesses, women, members of minority groups or all three.

The remedy proposed on page 147 of the FY 2012 Budget Proposal is “a system of automatic work-place pensions that will expand access to tens of millions of workers who currently lack plans” by providing their employees with a government-mandated “direct deposit IRA account,” exempting only businesses with 10 or fewer employees and providing participating businesses with tax credits to compensate for the businesses implementing and administering the plans.

While the Automatic IRA would serve the purpose of extending private retirement plans to disadvantaged and generally poorer workers, the innovation would place additional costs upon employers. It would require employer contributions to the plans, even if tax credits fully complemented the businesses for implementing and administering them.

Retirement USA

The Service Employee International Union, or SEIU, a key labor union ally of the Obama administration, has mounted an effort to create government-mandated worker retirement accounts as an entitlement program, with the possibility that a portion of all private retirement funds could be forced into U.S. Treasury debt.

Branding the program “Retirement USA,” the SEIU has joined with the AFL-CIO, the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington-based economic left-leaning think tank that receives substantial labor funding, and two other left-leaning interest groups, the Pension Rights Center and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security.

The Retirement USA idea is promote the concept that all workers in the U.S. have a right to a government retirement account that would fund a secure retirement with adequate dollars, in addition to Social Security and private ERISA-retirement workplace retirement programs such as 401(k) programs.

“Our goal is to involve all workers and all employees in a government-mandated retirement program, with the government putting up the difference for lower paid employees,” Nancy Hwa, a spokeswoman for the participating Pension Rights Center, told WND in 2010.

Put simply, the Retirement USA government-mandated workplace retirement account would require by law employers and employees to contribute to a retirement account for every employee and demand that a portion of that contribution go into a federal-government created annuity that would be funded by purchasing Treasury debt.

“Retirement USA is basically an effort that amounts to nationalizing 401(k)s and IRAs,” David John, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told WND when the Retirement USA idea was proposed two years ago.

Under the guise of making workplace retirement savings accounts available to all Americans and insuring that existing retirement savings accounts pay lifetime income, the SEIU-led Retirement USA effort is quietly exploring strategies that would create “Universal IRAs” or “Guaranteed Retirement Accounts” for all workers.

Following lead of Argentina

Writing in the London Telegraph in October 2008, business and economics editor Ambrose Evans-Pritchard warned that G7 nations, including the United States, may begin following the path of Argentina in forcing privately managed pension funds to be invested in government-issued debt.

In 2008, Argentine sovereign debt was trading at 29 cents on the dollar, reflecting the devalued state of the Argentine peso, with the result that private pensioners holding government debt in their retirement accounts could not be assured those bonds would have any meaningful value at maturity.

“Here is a warning to us all,” Evans-Pritchard wrote. “The Argentine state is taking control of the country’s privately managed pension funds in a dramatic move to raise cash.”

He warned the same could happen in the United States and Europe.

As the Islamist-in-Chief hedges the west’s bets to shore up the Muslim Brotherhood Mafia throughout the region (Hint: Benghazigate & accrued benefits to assorted Islamists via the POTUS’s gun running/weapon smuggling operation… out of the CIA’s largest ‘safe house’ in the Mid East…it was NOT a consulate…as weapons flowed to ‘Free Syrian’ proponents…a hodgepodge of Islamists…nary a western ally among them…but never mind…), as a counterweight against Iran’s mullahs, he has placed the west dead center between one Islamic devil and the other. NOT a safe place to be – if one desires freedom and liberty.

An apt comparison would be a hostage trying to free himself, not with the assistance/guidance of professional hostage negotiators, but opting to cajole as one tactic and to capitulate as the fall-back position, hoping to attain mercy from the kidnapper. Perhaps hiring the Three Stooges…Moe, Curly and Larry…is the safest route. Either way, the captive will end up dead. It ain’t gonna work.

In the same realm – but with breathtaking consequences… resonating long after we are dead and buried – the west is saddled with an Islamist-in-Chief who is fully on board with his Brothers taking over the Arab/Muslim world. “It is worse than appeasement to negotiate a “deal” with the Islamic theocrats in the occupied Iran, because any deal struck with these mullahs is only another ruse for them to further their plans. The UN resolutions are nothing more than pieces of paper good for burning, they can pass them all they want, president Ahmadinejad proclaims belligerently.

These Islamists go by their 1400-year-old charter of Allah, the Qur’an, the same charter that they hold in one hand while slashing the throat of an innocent infidel and yelling joyously “Allah is the greatest” the whole time.

To the misguided “Supreme Guide,” mullah Ali Khamenei of Iran, a few words are in order.

The civilized Iranians, descendants of Cyrus the Great, find you, mullah Ali Khamenei, and your cabal of Islamists guilty of heinous crimes. A partial list of charges is given below.

Domestically

  • You do not represent the Iranian people. You are an Islamist terrorist. You are a usurper of power. You are guilty of transforming a noble nation into a world pariah.
  • You are denying and violating a long-suffering people all its human rights.
  • You are guilty of beating, imprisoning and torturing a few dozen women who braved participating in a peaceful demonstration pleading for equal family rights, on the recent International Day of Women.
  • You systematically beat, rape, imprison, and torture all manner of citizens, from school teachers to students to union workers, for daring to raise their voices against the plight to which you have subjected them.
  • You savagely beat and haul to your dungeons of torture and death over a thousand of the tens of thousands of teachers who had gathered in front of the parliament requesting nothing more than their back pay and living wages.
  • In late 2009, you ordered the Basij forces, revolutionary guards, plain-clothed and government forces to massacre thousands of innocent people in a mass popular uprising over the fraudulent presidential election of your puppet, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
  • You direct systematic genocidal measures against all non-Shi’a religious minorities, with Baha’is as prime target, and genocidal actions against political groups; support of international terrorism; demolition of religious sites and cemeteries; for rape, torture, and summary execution of prisoners of conscience; forgery of documents, acts of blackmail and fraud, and much more.
  • You arrest some Christians; even your Quran calls “People of the Book,” for observing Christmas.
  • You implement barbaric practices of stoning, hanging and amputations for those who are convicted of crimes in your kangaroo courts without due process. You even imprison those few lawyers who rise in the defense of the innocent.
  • You plunder, mismanage and dole out Iran’s national wealth with the result that the great majority of the people are living in poverty. Iranian women are forced into prostitution to survive or simply sold as sex slaves in Persian Gulf states.
  • Your fascist misrule of nearly three decades has driven millions of Iran’s best children to the four corners of the world. Hundreds of thousands of educated Iranians are compelled to continue the exodus, depriving Iran of sorely needed talents at home.
  • You spend a fortune on the nuclear program that you claim is only aimed for peaceful purposes, while turning Iran into little more than a gas station nation, with its precious oil wealth squandered and its facilities on the verge of collapse through neglect.
  • You have created a suffocating social atmosphere that has driven masses of the people to the use of hard drugs as a way of numbing their pain.

Internationally

  • You look far and wide to support any and all terrorists. Your delusional theology mandates the creation of horrific conditions in the world so that your Hidden Imam is compelled to appear and establish his rule.
  • You spare no efforts at sabotaging any settlement between the Palestinians and Israelis. You arm and train all Palestinian factions such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and any and all that come.
  • You direct similar criminal schemes on your eastern flank, in Afghanistan. You consider any democratic system as the enemy of Islamofascism, and rightfully so.
  • You work ceaselessly, expand Iran’s stolen funds, and do all you can in support of your Shi’a co-fascists Hezbollah in Lebanon.
  • Your hands are dripping with the blood of thousands of Iraqis, victims of your bloodthirsty kin mercenaries aiming to kill a budding democracy in Iraq next door.
  • You supplied your mercenaries with armor-piercing projectiles for killing and maiming the coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Your cowardly killing by proxy, used these roadside planted bombs, have taken the lives of hundreds of Americans.
  • You interpreted the highly subdued reactions of the coalition to your savage actions as indications of weakness. So, you found it in yourself to venture into direct confrontation by capturing lightly armed British sailors and marines in Iraqi waters.
  • You are responsible for helping Syrian forces slaughter seekers of freedom.
  • You directly orchestrated an attack on the British embassy in Tehran last month and called the action of your “thugs,” “student protests.”
  • You plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador, Adel al-Jubeir, on US soil.

To misguided advocates of negotiation with the devil (mullahs), beware. The mullahs are on an Allah-mandated mission. They are intoxicated with petrodollars and aim to settle for nothing less than complete domination of the world under the Islamic Ummah.

I also reiterate the words of Prince Reza Pahlavi that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei must be held responsible and tried in the international court for crimes against humanity.”
